Jews named by the Hebrew name Moses usually had a similar name in the language of the countries in which they were born or lived. In Europe, they were called Maurici, Maurice, Morris, Mauricio. In Arabic-speaking countries, they were also called Mustafa with Musa – the Arabic name for Moses. [3] “And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before God; And the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged according to what was written in the books, according to their works. (Revelation 20:12) An important law is the lex talionis, “life for life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” (Ex 21:22-25; Lev. 24:19–20; Deuteronomy 19:15-21), which is sometimes misunderstood as a barbaric justification for personal vengeance and mutilation. On the contrary, it expresses the correct principle that judicial sanctions must correspond to the crime, thus limiting the permissible penalties. Whoever is responsible for someone else`s eye loss basically deserves to give up their own eye. In practice, however, the perpetrator normally appeases the injured party by paying an amount proportional to the degree of mutilation to replace the infliction of literal retaliation. Notice how such a “ransom” works in Exodus 21:29-30 and how literal retaliation does not occur in 21:18-19 and 21:26-27, where it would be expected. The availability of ransom seems to be so widespread that it must be expressly forbidden to exclude it (Num.
35:31). Jesus, according to Leviticus 19:18, teaches patient suffering instead of the incorrect application of the lex talionis for personal vengeance (Matthew 5:38-42). Breaking His law is a sin, and sin separates us from a holy God. Therefore, “. When you enter life, keep the commandments. (Matthew 19:17) Hebrews 7:5 And verily, those who are sons of Levi who receive the office of the priesthood are commanded to take tithing from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, although they come from the loins of Abraham: 7:12 For the priesthood to be changed, the law is necessarily also changed. 7:16 Who is made not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of a life without end? 7:19 For the law has made nothing perfect, but the bringing of a better hope has done so; by which we draw closer to God. 7:28 For the law makes men chief priests who have weakness; but the word of the oath, which has since been the law, makes the Son, who is consecrated forever. 8:4 For if he were on earth, let him not be a priest, for there are priests who offer gifts according to the law: 8:10 For this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after these days, saith the Lord; I will give them my laws in spirit, and I will write them in their hearts; And I will be a god unto them, and they will be a people unto me: 9:19 For when Moses had spoken all the commandments to all men according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book and all the people, 9:22 And almost all things are cleansed by the law with blood; And without bloodshed, there is no remission. 10:1 For the law, which has a shadow of good that will come, and not the image of things themselves, can never, with the sacrifices it has offered year after year, continually make the newcomers perfect.
10:8 And when he says above, Sacrifices and offerings, and burnt offerings, and sacrifices for sin, you do not want them, and you have no joy in them; offered by law; 10:16 This is the covenant I will make with them after these days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws in their hearts, and in their minds I will write them; 10:28 And he, who despised the law of Moses, died mercilessly among two or three witnesses: Shaul uses the word “law” 108 times in his letters to the Romans and Galatians. The next passage shows what “law” Shaul is talking about most of the time. Acts 6:13 And set up false witnesses who said, This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law: 7:53 And who received the law by the disposition of the angels, and did not keep it. 13:15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent them, saying, Men and brothers, if you have a word of warning to the people, say further. 13:39 And through him fall all those who believe they are justified, things which you cannot be justified by the law of Moses. 15:5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, arose, saying, It was necessary to circumcise them, and command them to keep the law of Moses. 15:24 For, as we have heard, some of those who have departed from us have troubled you with words, undermined your souls, saying, You must be circumcised and keep the law; to whom we have not given such a commandment: 18:13 Say, this man persuades men to worship God against the law. 18:14 And when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a bad or bad lewdness, O Jews, I would endure it with you: 18:15 But when it comes to words and names, and your law, you look at it; for I will not be a judge in such a case. 21:20 And when they heard him, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Behold, brethren, how many thousands of Jews are there who believe; and they are all zealous for the law: 18:24 Take them, and purify yourselves with them, and be responsible with them, that they may shave their heads; and let all know that what they have been informed of you is nothing; but that you yourself walk properly and abide by the law. 18:28 Weeping, men of Israel, help: It is the man who teaches all men everywhere against the people, the law, and this place, and who also brought the Greeks into the temple and polluted this holy place. 22:3 And I am truly a Jewish man, born in Tarsus, a city of Cilicia, but raised in that city at the feet of Gamaliel, and who was taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and zealous before God, as you all are today. 22:12 And an Ananias, a pious man according to the law, who had a good account of all the Jews who dwelt there, 23:3 And Paul said unto him, God will smite you, you white wall; for have thou shalt sat to obey me according to the law, and to command me to be slain against the law? 23:29 And that I have seen accused of questions of their law, but he has not been accused of anything worthy of death or chains.
24:6 And who also was about to desecrate the temple which we have taken and which we would have judged according to our law. 24:14 And I confess unto you, that, according to the manner in which they call heresy, I worship the God of my fathers, and I believe all that is written in the law and in the prophets: 25:8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I offended anything? 28:23 And when they had fixed a day upon him, many came to him in his dwelling; to whom he exposed and testified of the kingdom of God, convincing them of Jesus from morning to night, both of the law of Moses and of the prophets. Deuteronomy has many prescriptions. Chapters 5 through 11 emphasize the general requirement to obey God; Chapters 12 to 25 offer peculiarities in various areas of life (worship, festivals, theocratic state officials, manslaughter, war, sexuality, etc.). The structure of Deuteronomy follows that of the federal treaties of the second millennium, in which the laws correspond to the provisions of the covenant. The thematic units in chapters 12 to 25 are organized according to the order of the Ten Commandments. Luke 2:22 And when the days of their purification were over according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem to offer him to the Lord; 2:23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every man who opens the motherly womb shall be called holy before the Lord;) 2:24 And to offer a sacrifice according to what is in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young doves. 2:25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon; And the same man was righteous and godly, and awaited the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
