Iowa Legal Aid provides free, high-quality legal education, counseling, and representation to Iowan seniors and low-income individuals with civil law issues that most dramatically affect Iowa`s poor and vulnerable populations. Position: Iowa Legal Aid is seeking candidates for a paralegal position at its Central Iowa Regional Office in Des Moines. · Assist and assist staff and volunteer lawyers, including assisting with legal research, preparation of legal documents, and clerical and reception work. The position can be located in any of Iowa Legal Aid`s regional offices (Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City, Mason City, Sioux City, Ottumwa or Waterloo), although our most urgent need is currently in Iowa City. · Coordination and/or implementation of public relations and municipal legal training. Perform initial client selection and/or client onboarding, including data entry into ILA`s case management program, assessment of financial eligibility and conflict status, and formulation of the nature of the client`s legal problem. · Perform duties related to the provision of legal services to clients under the direction and supervision of a licensed lawyer. Staff Attorney Position: Through free legal aid and legal education in the community, staff attorneys bring hope, dignity, and justice to low-income Iowans and other vulnerable people. Legal aid assistance in Iowa ranges from short-term counsel and service to full representation before administrative agencies as well as state and federal courts of appeals and appeals. In our diverse practice, we prioritize work in the areas of housing, domestic violence, income support, health care, individual rights and consumer issues to meet our clients` most important needs. Staff lawyers frequently appear in court and serve clients in the community through divorce and divorce clinics, our eviction diversion project services, and targeted outreach events. Qualifications: Applicants must be law school graduates who are admitted to the Iowa Bar, may be admitted upon request, or are available for the next scheduled bar examination. Previous legal experience is preferred. Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in poverty law and a strong commitment to providing a full range of legal services to low-income individuals.

These assistance services provide free legal assistance to eligible applicants to help Iowan residents maintain their homes and avoid immediate homelessness. Our assistance services are particularly critical to our service to women, people of color, and people with disabilities, communities disproportionately affected by the ongoing eviction crisis. Iowa Legal Aid has also partnered with local agencies that offer rent assistance so people can access legal advice and courthouse rental assistance. The Eviction Diversion Project staff lawyer will be responsible for staffing and promoting the local helpdesk, as well as supporting and coordinating grants for our assistance services across the state.

Preference is given to candidates who work in our offices in Council Bluffs, Des Moines or Waterloo.
