The standard game contract and the ABC require players to comply with various rules, guidelines, and codes. Violations of the various rules are taken very seriously. It is gratifying to see that our work leads to tangible results for an entire playgroup. For example, we recently completed negotiations on the AFLW-CBA for Season 7, and among other important results for our cohort of AFLW players, there was a 94% increase in players` average salaries – an outcome that we hope will change their lives. I stayed there for more than two years and although the legal and professional skills I developed were invaluable, I always had a burning desire to work in sport. During the lockdown, I started a postgraduate course in sports law and started researching the roles involved. When I saw that the AFLPA was looking for legal counsel, I applied immediately – it was an opportunity to combine my passion for the sport (and the AFL in particular) with my legal skills. Our main task is to negotiate the collective agreement on behalf of the actors and then monitor the conditions in the workplace to ensure that what we have agreed to is respected. We play an active role in all changes to rules and regulations to ensure your rights are protected, including negotiating AFL policies. We also engage on issues such as health and safety on behalf of all stakeholders. From the end of 2017, players who leave the game due to an injury they sustained while working as AFL footballers that prevents them from playing at senior level again in a competition will be able to apply for a football-ending injury payment.

The sum of a payment is granted based on the player`s age at the end of the player`s last contract and the base salary of the last year of his final contract. The AFL Players` Association is looking for a Legal Advisor with 2-3 years of post-qualification experience to join its Legal and Players team. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer and working closely with the Director General – Legal and Player Affairs, the Legal Counsel will provide collective and individual legal advice to AFLPA activities and our member groups. Our advice is confidential and independent, and we encourage you to contact us for all legal matters. AFLPA`s work is dynamic and challenging as the AFL industry continues to change and evolve. The Legal & Player Affairs team exists to promote and protect the interests of AFL and AFLW players, individually and collectively. To be successful in this role, legal counsel must be able to provide timely, accurate and practical legal advice, taking into account the diverse stakeholders in the AFL industry. The candidate should be able to demonstrate 2-3 years of legal experience in private law practice or in internal roles, have excellent design and communication skills, be highly motivated and excited about the challenge of working as a player advocate in football. The AFLPA legal team is also available to discuss individual legal issues with former player members free of charge and confidentially. If issues require specialized legal advice or significant legal work, our team can help refer members to outside legal counsel for assistance. The main task of the organization, and in particular of the legal team, is to negotiate collective agreements (CLAs) on behalf of both gaming groups.

These documents, negotiated between the AFLPA and AFL, set out key conditions such as salaries, working conditions and player rights, as well as a revenue-sharing model that ensures players can participate in the growth of the game. It is also our duty to ensure that the industry`s commitments in these documents continue to be met. The AFLPA has five departments. Apart from the legal team, these include: Membership and Camp programs; services, communication, business and strategic innovation; Operations; and relationships with players and stakeholders. The legal department consists of three lawyers, a data analyst and a supervisor of accredited players` agents. As a small team of lawyers, I am fortunate to be able to work on a wide range of issues and questions. In addition to negotiating and monitoring collective agreements and advocating for issues affecting our collective play groups, we also provide assistance with a variety of individual player issues. Examples include issues related to the use of player images, anti-doping issues, contract disputes, disciplinary issues, and player health and safety issues. I graduated from Deakin University with a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws at the end of 2018 and accepted a student position with the Australian Companies Supervisory Authority, where I eventually settled into their corporate governance team.
